What Is Felted Soap & Why Use It?

Felted soap is a centuries-old craft; wool roving is felted around a bar of soap, creating a seamless outer layer that works like a built-in washcloth. As you use it, suds emerge through the wool while the fibers continue to tighten around the bar. The result is a gently exfoliating shower experience that significantly extends the life of your soap.

Wool is naturally antimicrobial, biodegradable, and safe for hands, face, and body. With care, the original felt can last for years and when you're ready for a new one, compost it in your garden. No plastic waste here.

What Makes a Wooly Washer?

Wooly Washers are our version of felted soap, made in small batches in our studio. Each artisanal bar of soap is wrapped in 100% wool roving and wet‑felted by hand to form a soft felt cover. Artist, Ella Hauwiller then meticulously needle‑felts each piece with an original design.

No two are exactly alike. Each Wooly Washer is meant to be used daily, carried while traveling, or thoughtfully gifted.

They're especially loved for:

  • Travel and camping adventures (no slimy bags of soap, or exploding bottles)
  • Meaningful gifting (handmade, functional, and one of a kind)
  • Folks with limited dexterity (easy to grip, less slipping from your fingers)
  • Turning everyday washing into something special
  • Bath-time magic for young kids

Use is Simple, Made to Be Reused

  • Wet the Wooly Washer and gently squeeze until suds come through the wool, then wash as usual.
  • Allow the Wooly Washer to dry between uses — a complimentary wooden soap dish is included for this purpose.
  • To avoid pilling, ensure that suds are coming through the wool before scrubbing.
  • When the soap is depleted, cut a slit in the side of the wool and insert a new smaller bar, or saved soap slivers. With continued use, the cut wool edge will "heal" as it continues to felt around the new soap.
  • Refresh the softness of the wool with a touch of lanolin when inserting a new bar
  • The felted pouch may alternatively be repurposed. Fill it with dried flowers as a sock drawer sachet; fill it with wool and use as a dryer ball or ornament; use it to patch up your favorite sweater, use it without a new bar as a bath or kitchen scrubby, or fill it with catnip for your very fancy kitty.

Natural Variation

  • Colors may soften, fade, or lightly bleed over time.
  • Designs will naturally evolve with use.

These changes are expected. A lesson in impermanence.
